DAY OF AFRICAN CHILD (DAC) JUNE 16, 2024
THEME: BUILDING RESILIENT EDUCATION SYSTEM FOR INCREASE ACCESS TO INCLUSIVE, LIFELONG QUALITY, AND RELEVANT LEARNING IN AFRICA.
The African Child Day is celebrated to commemorate the SOWETO children's uprising of 1976, during which thousands of south African students protested the apartheid government use of Afrikaans as their language of instruction in Bantu school.
The International Day of the African Child (DAC) has been celebrated on June 16 every year since 1991, when it was first initiated by the Organisation Of African Unity (OAU). It's to honour those who participated in the SOWETO uprising in 1976 on that day. It also raises awareness of the continuing need for improvement of the education provided to African children. The movie Sarafina! (written by Mbongeni Ngema) is an epitome of this event.
Today, we honor this day in respect for those who fought for what was right: stability, quality, security, growth and fairness.We honor the resilience, courage and potential of every African child.
